Rubedo

Audio and videotape. Dimensions variable.

The recycling of pre-recorded audio and videotape reveal an interest in bringing an abundant, commonplace material from our recent past, into new contexts.

The cassette tape used in this work used to sit on the bottom of my bookshelf in a cardboard box. They were largely forgotten, covered in dust, usurped by CD’s then digital downloads. Having always been drawn to the materiality of the shiny luscious looping tape, I have created a work that demonstrates a strong engagement with process and a desire to work with a discarded yet utterly familiar material.

Rubedo, the Latin word for ‘redness’, is also the final stage in an alchemical practice where matter and spirit are transformed into new states.  Choosing audio and videotape as my preferred ‘matter’, reflects my deep interest in re-using and transforming my own personal collection of obsolete materials, into new and unexpected forms.
