The Earth Bling Experiment. 

While flicking through a 1960 Scientific America magazine, I was struck by two phrases, which have been instrumental in creating this body of work. One posed the question “What kind of jewels will they take to the moon?” the other simply stated, “Arranging a room for conversation”. These two phrases spoke to my interest in using a range of materials and processes to create formal sets of objects that not only respond to the multiplicity and complexity of the natural world but also to refer to notions of connection and display.

Using materials such as sand, salt, clay, graphite, cotton, wood, plasticine and plastic, The Earth Bling Experiment is a set of formal, interconnecting objects that could be a meditation on the common elements of the earths crust or merely a grouping of elaborate, decorative earthly ‘gems’.

Sample/Together  combines diagrams, textile and paper craft processes with new and recycled materials to create a collection of interrelated samples or ‘one offs’.    These interrelated drawings and forms, reference collage, and the assembling and juxtaposing of sample against sample, to create endlessly flexible wholes. Grid layouts, diagrams and circular forms feature throughout and while there is replication, variation abounds.   Inspired by the display tables and cabinets found within museum contexts,  Sample/Together  forms an archive of process, a record of action and documents the potential of patterns to create new hybrid forms.

Slow Territory - Rubicon ARI, North Melbourne

Slow Territory responds to the connection between stitching, weaving and drawing, and the contemplative, meditative nature of these activities. Using natural dyes, inks, acrylics,  and collaged felt, silk and cotton, the works respond to a range of natural processes such as the cycle of rehydration and evaporation found within salt lakes, tidal drawings of bush fire ash on coastal areas and verdant growth on lava rocks.   Notions of distilling an atmosphere of place are explored and the works form a map of remembrance and meditative intent.
