Sample/Together  combines diagrams, textile and paper craft processes with new and recycled materials to create a collection of interrelated samples or ‘one offs’.    These interrelated drawings and forms, reference collage, and the assembling and juxtaposing of sample against sample, to create endlessly flexible wholes. Grid layouts, diagrams and circular forms feature throughout and while there is replication, variation abounds.   Inspired by the display tables and cabinets found within museum contexts,  Sample/Together  forms an archive of process, a record of action and documents the potential of patterns to create new hybrid forms.

Rubedo  Audio and videotape. Dimensions variable.  The recycling of pre-recorded audio and videotape reveal an interest in bringing an abundant, commonplace material from our recent past, into new contexts.  The cassette tape used in this work used to sit on the bottom of my bookshelf in a cardboard box. They were largely forgotten, covered in dust, usurped by CD’s then digital downloads. Having always been drawn to the materiality of the shiny luscious looping tape, I have created a work that demonstrates a strong engagement with process and a desire to work with a discarded yet utterly familiar material.  Rubedo , the Latin word for ‘redness’, is also the final stage in an alchemical practice where matter and spirit are transformed into new states.  Choosing audio and videotape as my preferred ‘matter’, reflects my deep interest in re-using and transforming my own personal collection of obsolete materials, into new and unexpected forms.

G.O.L.D. Exhibition - Kings ARI.  Deb K Williams, Reiko Miyazawa, Georgina Ward and Alice Parker. Parker, Miyazawa, Ward and K Williams’ practices share the common ground of investigating how widely varied, even disparate materials and objects relate to each other and to the space they interrupt and re-create.  Embodied in their wide collection of cast-off materials and experimental use of handcrafted processes, is an awareness of not only the historic origin of the ‘matter’, but the importance of the mutability of its intended life, and the varying meanings the artists’ physical engagement and interpretive manipulation effects.   Image 1-4 - In the Beginning, a Puzzle.  Paper, trace, letterset, magnetic casette tape, acrylic paint, wooden frame Image 5-7 - Rubedo.  Magnetic casette tape, glitter, glue
